Productivity SA & 5S and Kaizen
By joining forces, Productivity SA and Japan Productivity Centre presented the 5S and Kaizen initiative to improve the productivity in South Africa from April 2015 – March 2016. Three of the TASA GTI members have already passed this process: SL Diamonds, Weco and UTP.
What is 5S?
The 5S programme is focused on achieving visual order by means of organisation, cleanliness and the standardisation of these procedures. The results gained from implementing the 5S are:
- Improved productivity
- Greater efficiency
- Improved employee involvement
- Increased safety
- Sort – Discard any unnecessary items
- Set in order – Arrange necessary item in good order
- Shine – Clean the workplace
- Standardise – Standardise cleaning operations
- Sustain – Continuously implement what you need to do to ensure a clean workplace.
What does 5S consist of?
This is what Weco had to say about their experience with 5S and Kaizen:
“The Kaizen Experience was a fantastic initiative between TASA and Productivity SA, we were fortunate enough to be selected as one of the pilot companies for the project and the improvements we have realized have really helped us to improve our quality culture and employee engagement. We started with a 5S implementation, which we have successfully rolled out across the factory floor, it is an ongoing initiative which means we realise new improvements on a weekly basis. Most of our focus has been on sorting and cleaning the factory, getting rid of items we no longer need or use and rearranging our tooling so that it is more easily accessible. This has resulted in both time and money savings and improved our overall productivity substantially.”
